World number 19 Felix Auger-Aliassime beat home hopeful Leandro Riedi in straight sets on Wednesday to begin what looks an unlikely title defence in Basel. The 23-year-old lost each of his first eight ATP tour finals before a huge breakthrough last season saw him win four, including three in quick succession here at the European Open, here in Basel and finally the Firenze Open. 2023 has been a very tough wake-up call for the Canadian, though, as he has experienced his first real period of injury issues and the poor form that comes with it. It should not take too much longer for his confidence to return but this is a tough match to call between two players in dire need of a strong run to get back on track. World number 65 Botic van de Zandschulp, like Auger-Aliassime, came into Basel on a negative record for the season but two wins in qualifying gave him an edge in a three-set opener over Roberto Bautista Agut. The 28-year-old is at his best in these conditions and there have been some encouraging signs in recent weeks but Auger-Aliassime should have enough to edge through a potentially nerve-ridden match.
The pair share a 1-1 head-to-head record but Auger-Aliassime earned at least a set in both encounters. Back the Canadian to do so again inside an accumulator or take him to edge through outright on its own.
