THE PREDICTION

22-year-old Bianca Andreescu passed a significant test on Wednesday night, beating Alize Cornet for the first time in a three-set tussle. The Canadian won her home Masters here in Toronto back in 2019 on her way to a career-high world number four she set after winning the US Open later that year and she should be considered a serious threat to the title this week. This is another tough match, though, against up-and-coming Chinese star Qinwen Zheng, who will break the top 50 for a first time next week after reaching the round of 16 at a Masters for the first time. The 19-year-old was in control against Ons Jabeur before the Tunisian was forced to retire from their match on Wednesday and she has consistently performed well on the bigger stages this season. Andreescu may need all the help she can get from the home crowd here but they will back Canada’s only major winner to the hilt and that should see her come through the outright winner. Three sets would not be a surprise here.
