26-year-old Beatriz Haddad-Maia grabbed the best result of her career on Thursday night in a pulsating three-set victory over world number one Iga Swiatek. The Brazilian recently blossomed on grass with back-to-back WTA titles won in Nottingham and Birmingham but after a few weeks of choppy form she has bounced back admirably in Toronto, also ousting home hopeful Leylah Fernandez in the second round. World number 12 Belinda Bencic will do well not to underestimate her opponent here whilst also benefitting from a sudden lack of Swiatek in her portion of the draw. The 25-year-old knows how to win here after bursting onto the world stage in 2015, winning her maiden WTA title at the Canada Masters in Toronto with a huge run that included a win over Serena Williams – whom she beat once again here on Tuesday. The Swiss is yet to drop a set this week after ousting Garbine Muguruza for just four games conceded and despite Haddad-Maia’s heroics she should be considered the fair favourite if she keeps a level head. Back Bencic to win outright here, or at least a set if you are feeling cautious.
