World number 53 Arantxa Rus claimed the upset of the day yesterday with a remarkable three-set victory over top seed Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova. The 33-year-old finally claimed her maiden WTA title last summer, on clay at the Hamburg Open, but she is a seasoned ITF titlist with all the experience required to make full use of this opportunity in a now totally wide-open draw in Rouen. World number 60 Magda Linette could be another benefactor of Pavlyuchenkova’s absence after coasting through her draw so far, conceding just three games to Natalija Stevanovic on Wednesday. The Pole is capable of much better tennis than her current ranking suggests but she has struggled to rediscover the level that saw her reach the semi-finals of the Australian Open last season. Rus won their only previous encounter, in Melbourne, in three sets four years ago and backing her to earn at least a set feels the most sensible way to avoid a tough result to call.
