THE LOWDOWN

ALEXANDER BUBLIK

24-year-old Alexander Bublik set a career-high ATP world ranking of 30th last month after winning his first title at the Montpellier Open. The Kazakh had lost his four previous finals, two in 2019 and two last season, but he has all the potential required to end his career with five or six more – especially at ATP 250 level. Bublik reached the quarter-finals of two Masters events last season at the Miami Open and Madrid Open.

ANDY MURRAY

Former world number one Andy Murray claimed the 700th tour win of his career on Friday with a comeback win against Taro Daniel, whom he has faced three times already this season. The 34-year-old has claimed 219 of those wins at Masters level, with 14 titles spread across seven of the nine Masters events. The Brit almost certainly cannot complete the set now after opting to miss out the clay swing, with Monte-Carlo still missing alongside Indian Wells, where he once finished runner-up to Rafael Nadal in 2009.

THE PREDICTION

After a shaky start against Taro Daniel there are plenty of positives to take for Andy Murray through the next two tournaments ahead of being reunited full-time with Ivan Lendl. The former world number one leads Alexander Bublik 2-0 in their head-to-head record having never dropped a set against the maverick Kazakh with two first serves and no Plan B. Murray’s returning prowess limits Bublik’s main weapon, with their most recent match ending in straight sets at the Rotterdam Open last month. The 700th career win is another monkey of Murray’s back and with Bublik winning just one of his last four matches since a first title back the three-time Grand Slam champion to win outright here.
