THE PREDICTION

Former world number three Stan Wawrinka beat fellow veteran Albert Ramos-Vinolas in straight sets at the Marrakech Open this week before falling short against up-and-coming Mariano Navone. The 39-year-old is a three-time Grand Slam champion, enjoying three years in the sun between 214 and 2016, but only one of his 16 ATP titles came at Masters level with victory here in Monte-Carlo a decade ago.

World number 11 Alex de Minaur broke into the top 10 at the start of this season off the back of an excellent surge in level over the past 12 or so months, although two round of 16 exits in March will be of some small concern. The 25-year-old spent most of his formative years in tennis on Barcelona’s clay to hand him some excellent experience in these conditions but his playstyle certainly favours the faster surfaces – with seven of his eight titles coming on hardcourts and one on grass. It is a surprise to find that this is the first meeting between the two and it promises to be a thriller if Wawrinka can evoke old memories here. De Minaur should be in for his best swing on clay so far but it would not be a surprise to see Wawrinka rediscover something. Back De Minaur to earn at least a set to leave the victor up to chance.

TIP: ALEX DE MINAUR TO WIN A SET
