THE PREDICTION

Sydney Tennis Classic fifth seed Paula Badosa was part of a fierce three-set battle with Belinda Bencic but the Spaniard rallied well in the third to reach the semi-finals. The 24-year-old has also taken out Jelena Ostapenko and Ajla Tomljanovic this week in form that looks close to her best last season, where she won a shock Masters title at Indian Wells and reached the semi-finals of the WTA Finals on her debut. World number 26 Daria Kasatkina upset the favourite for the title, though, in the WTA Finals champion Garbine Muguruza in two commanding sets. The 24-year-old is yet to drop a set against three top 20 players in Muguruza, Elise Mertens and 2020 Australian Open champion Sofia Kenin so far this week for some serious form coming into Melbourne but Badosa should just about find a way through here. A first meeting is always a tricky call, so taking the Spaniard to win at least a set as the likelier of two capable winners seems reasonable here.
