THE LOWDOWN

21-year-old Hugo Gaston provided one of the moments of the season on Thursday night as came back from 5-0 down in the second set, having taken the first against Carlos Alcaraz, to win seven straight games and at one point 17 straight points in front of a manic crowd. Le Marseillaise rang out throughout Centre Court to celebrate a young French player who has already shown flashes of his capability last season, again in Paris, with a run to the round of 16 of Roland-Garros via victory over former champion Stan Wawrinka. Before Gaston’s heroics, world number two Daniil Medvedev continued the defence of his Paris Masters title in an entertaining come-from-behind victory over in-form Sebastian Korda. The 25-year-old’s pursuit of the year-end number one spot is getting harder with every round Novak Djokovic reaches, which has not been helped by the Serb receiving a walkover to the quarter-finals.

THE PREDICTION

Hugo Gaston has already taken a third off his current ATP world ranking of 103 by reaching a first Masters quarter-final and the diminutive left-hander looks to be finding a way to be a more consistent thorn in the side of top players. Taking out man of the moment Carlos Alcaraz from 5-0 down, even though he was up a set, is something extraordinary and he will be backed to the hilt by a jubilant, partisan crowd here despite it likely being in vain. The reigning champion’s game will not offer as many opportunities as Alcaraz’s, with the Spaniard’s serve not yet the finished article, and realistically at this stage of a tournament Medvedev should be winning this in straight sets.
