THE PREDICTION
There are so many things to get excited for about the Roland-Garros Women’s Singles final, not least that Barbora Krejcikova and Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova have never faced each other before and they are next to each other at 32nd, Pavlyuchenkova, and 33rd, Krejcikova, in the WTA world rankings. Nobody could have foreseen the way this Women’s Singles draw could have panned out as seed after seed dropped out of the competition but both players find themselves in a first Grand Slam final and they thoroughly deserve their place. The pair took out three of the pre-tournament favourites in Aryna Sabalenka, beaten by Pavlyuchenkova in the round of 16, Coco Gauff and Maria Sakkari, beaten by Krejcikova in the previous two rounds, and both have enjoyed success in the Women’s Doubles too.
This should be an emotional rollercoaster with both players intense baseline battlers and a result looks too close to call. Based on who she has taken out so far, the favourite looks to be just about Krejcikova but Pavlyuchenkova has come so close so many times before that the Russian should be able to find an extra gear here. Take this likely lengthy final to see three sets and leave the 2021 champion up to chance.
