It’s been a long time now since Jose de Sousa hit the ultimate high of winning a major televised title, the Grand Slam of Darts back in 2020. Since then, the Portuguese star has struggled badly and only made it to Ally Pally this year through a last-minute qualifier. He’s been dealt a tough first round draw against a player whom he has not had much success against.
Each of the last three matches between Ricardo Pietreczko and De Sousa has since the German triumph on each occasion. It’s also key to factor in that De Sousa has not been in the best of form leading up to the World Darts Championship, something that Pietreczko may well end up capitalising on.
Pietreczko is higher in the world rankings than De Sousa and playing the better darts. The psychological effect of beating De Sousa three times in a row can’t be underestimated either, so backing Pietreczko has to be favoured here.
