When it comes to experience at the 43rd Ryder Cup, the European team have a very clear advantage. The United States have no less than six rookies in their ranks which means that half of their team will be making their Ryder Cup debut at Whistling Straits. Europe on the other hand have three rookies in their side but the number of appearances among their teammates also dwarfs that of the Americans.
Lee Westwood comes into this event with ten previous Ryder Cup appearances, just two fewer than the USA’s combined number for their entire team. Between the Europeans, they boast 38 appearances at the Ryder Cup, over three times as many as the Americans (12).
Dustin Johnson leads the way for the United States with four appearances and 16 matches played with Jordan Spieth (14) the only other player to reach double figures. Westwood and Spaniard Sergio Garica have combined for an impressive 85 matches which is almost double the amount that the entire American team have played (49). With 156 Ryder Cup matches for the Europeans, they will hope their significant advantage in terms of experience can aid them in their quest to retain the trophy.
Perhaps unsurprisingly, the amount of experience in terms of appearances and matches also translates to the respective overall age of the two teams. The total age of the Americans comes in at 347 years, an average of just under 29-years-old which perhaps shows how the golf demographic is changing. Europe come in at 415 combined years, an average of just over 34-and-a-half years which is a significant difference, although that is somewhat exasperated by the inclusion of veterans Westwood (48), Ian Poulter (45), Paul Casey (44) and Garcia (41).
