THE LOWDOWN

Famalicao

With two games of the 2022/23 Primeira Liga season to go, Famalicao are still in the hunt for a potential, albeit unlikely, top six finish and, as a result, UEFA Europa Conference League qualification. They begin this weekend’s round of fixtures sitting eight in the table, five points behind sixth-place Arouca.

The home team come into this on the back of a goalless draw away to Vizela, in which they managed to hold on for that point after their forward, Leandro Sanca, was sent off with 15 minutes of the 90 to go. That means they are now winless in three top-flight matches and are winless in five matches across all competitions.

The Primeira Liga has endured a low-scoring theme throughout much of the last decade and that has been no different this season. Famalicao are a good representation of that, too, with just 35 goals scored in their 32 matches.

Porto

Under the management of Sergio Conceicao, reigning Portuguese champions Porto, are set to relinquish their grip on the Primeira Liga trophy. They begin the 33rd match day sitting four points behind the league leaders, who have been at the top-of-the-table throughout the campaign, Benfica.

Porto have been really impressive since the turn of the year and they come into this on the back of a 2-1 win at home to newly-promoted Casa Pia, last weekend. That was Porto’s ninth successive victory in all competitions and they are unbeaten in their last 13 matches as they keep themselves just about involved in the title race.

That aforementioned 2-1 victory against a Casa Pia side that have struggled in 2023 was a very dramatic one. They went into the half-time break a goal down after an own goal from Evanilson deep in first-half stoppage-time. However, a 56th minute equaliser from Mehdi Taremi was then followed by a winner from former Reading striker Danny Loader, in the 93rd minute.

THE PREDICTION

These two faced off in the two-legged Taca de Portugal semi-final tie a few weeks ago with Porto winning both games by a one-goal margin, ending up with a 5-3 aggregate victory. Famalicao are still in the hunt for potential top six finish and UEFA Europa Conference League qualification but it is extremely unlikely. They now face a Porto side that have already beaten them twice in the last month and remain on a title charge. Another Porto victory is the expected outcome for this one.

TIP: PORTO TO WIN
