THE LOWDOWN

ATALANTA

In the last few seasons, Atalanta have had to rebuild a few times, evolving from one era of players to the next. The Bergamasci are once again undergoing that process, which has been undermined by key injuries to new signings El Bilal Toure and Gianluca Scamacca. Gian Piero Gasperini’s goal will be to target a top four or five spot and UEFA Champions League qualification with the home team.

After a slow start to the season in which they managed two wins and two defeats in their opening four matches, Atalanta have now enjoyed back-to-back victories to begin this weekend’s round of fixtures sitting in the top four and the UEFA Champions League spots. They defeated Verona away from home by a goal to nil in midweek.

JUVENTUS

After their bizarre season last year which was generally underwhelming but would have ended with being runners’ up without their hefty points deduction, Juventus would expect to rebuild this summer and try to, at the very least, finish back in those top four spots. The Old Lady have started relatively well with some bizarrely bad performances thrown in.

Their slender 1-0 win over Lecce in midweek followed a 4-2 defeat to Sassuolo last weekend, with Juve’s old foe Domenico Berardi starring in that game. Massimiliano Allegri had warned against too much optimism in Turin, which is very Allegri, following their 3-1 defeat of last year’s runners’ up Lazio after the international break.

THE TEAM NEWS

ATALANTA

As mentioned, Atalanta’s rebuild has been hindered and undermined by injuries to Toure and Scamacca but they remain the only absentees for this weekend.

PREDICTED XI (3-4-2-1): Carnesecchi; Toloi, Djimsti, Kolasinac; Holm, Ederson, de Roon, Ruggeri; Koopmeiners, Lookman; Pasalic

UNAVAILABLE: Toure (Injured), Scamacca (Injured)

QUESTIONABLE:

JUVENTUS

Massimiliano Allegri is dealing with the suspension of Paul Pogba as well as injuries to full-back duo Mattia Di Sciglio and Alex Sandro, as well as Moise Kean.

PREDICTED XI (3-5-2): Szczesny; Gatti, Bremer, Danilo; McKennie, Miretti, Locatelli, Rabiot, Kostic; Viahovic, Chiesa

UNAVAILABLE: Pogba (Suspended), Kean (Injured), Alex Sandro (Injured), De Sciglio (Injured)

QUESTIONABLE:

THE PREDICTION

These two sit a point and a place apart in the table with both sides eyeing up a top four spot this season after different levels of rebuild over the summer transfer window. Both Gasperini and Allegri are seeking a fresher, newer approach and, with that, it could well take to time to gel. Atalanta have often been free scoring in the past but have been grinding out results of late and they now face a Juve side that, despite the younger look, remain as Allegri and as pragmatic as ever so a low-scoring encounter seems likely in Bergamo.
