THE LOWDOWN

HEIDENHEIM

Heidenheim’s mini-run which saw them pick up four points from a possible six came to an end last Sunday as they ran out of steam against Bayer Leverkusen. After coming from behind to equalise at the BayArena, the strength-in-depth within the Leverkusen squad was utilised to great effect by Xabi Alonso, underlining the gulf in resources between both sides.

The hosts scored three times in the final half hour to win 4-1 but Heidenheim remain three points clear of the relegation places despite that defeat. If they can cut down the volume of goals they are conceding, then more points certainly won’t be far away for them.

UNION BERLIN

Union Berlin travel to Heidenheim on the back of four defeats in all competitions, three of those coming in the Bundesliga. Theis poor recent run of results has seen them slip down into tenth-place, five points adrift of the European places, underlining the importance of them getting back to winning ways as soon as possible.

With their first home Champions League fixture this coming midweek, it’s crucial that Union’s players are focused on this important domestic assignment first as any complacency will see Heidenheim punish them in a big way. Just ask Borussia Dortmund!

THE TEAM NEWS

HEIDENHEIM

Heidenheim still won’t be able to call upon Marnon-Thomas Busch or Elidon Qenaj. Busch remains out with a muscle injury, whilst Qenaj’s knee problem is still yet to subside. Aside from those two however, Frank Schmitt should have a fully fit squad to choose from here.

PREDICTED XI (4-4-2): Muller; Traore, Mainka, Siersleben, Fohrenbach; Dinkci, Maloney, Theuerkauf, Beste; Pieringer, Kleindienst

UNAVAILABLE: Busch (Injured), Qenaj (Injured)

QUESTIONABLE:

UNION BERLIN

Midfielders Sami Khedira and Andras Schafer are still missing for Union with calf and foot injuries respectively. Kevin Volland remains suspended, whilst centre-back Robin Knoche is out with a muscle problem. There is also a doubt over Alex Kral.

PREDICTED XI (3-5-2): Ronnow; Doekhi, Bonucci, Leite; Trimmel, Laidouni, Aaronson, Haberer, Roussillon; Fofana, Behrens

UNAVAILABLE: Khedira (Injured), Knoche (Injured), Schafer (Injured), Volland (Suspended)

QUESTIONABLE: Kral (Injured)

THE PREDICTION

There’s no doubt that playing in the Champions League and the extra weight that competing in such a competition puts on the squad has proven challenging for Union Berlin. Their Bundesliga form has taken a nose-dive and as Heidenheim’s players gain more confidence and comfort competing at this level with every passing week, this is a big opportunity for them to pick up a statement victory. Utilising the double chance market may prove a shrewd move here, whilst backing Heidenheim to pick up at least a point, if not all three.

TIP: DOUBLE CHANCE – HEIDENHEIM/DRAW
