THE LOWDOWN

NEWCASTLE

  • After a red card was dished out to centre-back Cieran Clark inside the first ten minutes of Newcastle’s crunch battle with relegation strugglers Norwich, Eddie Howe’s side can take real heart from the fact that they managed to come away with point despite playing with ten-men for so long, although it does ramp the pressure up on Newcastle ahead of this match.
  • Clark will be suspended for the visit of Burnley, but Howe has plenty of options to choose from in defence with Federico Fernandez making a case for a starting berth after putting in an excellent performance off the bench this past Tuesday and captain Jamal Lascelles back from suspension alongside Matt Richie.

BURNLEY

  • Burnley proved impenetrable at the back against Wolves last time out, securing a 0-0 draw away from home although that result does keep them inside the bottom three, however they can extend the gap between them and bottom-placed Newcastle to six points with victory here.
  • The Clarets welcome both James Tarkowski and Ashley Westwood back from suspension and Sean Dyche will have a tough decision as to whether both should be thrown into the starting line-up after keeping a clean sheet at Molineux.

BURNLEY

PREDICTED XI (4-4-2): Pope; Lowton, Tarkowski, Mee, Taylor; Gudmundsson, Westwood, Brownhill, McNeil; Cornet, Wood

QUESTIONABLE: Bardsley (Injured)

THE PREDICTION

This is a massive game for both sides with the consequences of defeat huge in terms of the league table. For Newcastle, the three points are more important for them to gain and this may play into Burnley’s hands as they can afford to soak up pressure and look to hit the Magpies on the counter-attack. The home side cannot commit too many bodies forwards, knowing the threat Burnley pose and must try and temper their attacking aggression in order to maintain a level of defensive stability. With that in mind, a cagey affair looks on the cards and regardless of who comes out on top, under 2.5 goals scored has to be favoured.

Tip: UNDER 2.5 GOALS
