THE LOWDOWN

ASTON VILLA

  • Aston Villa fell to their first defeat under new boss Steven Gerrard in midweek, losing 1-2 to high-flying Man City although the hosts can take heart from fighting back after going in at half-time 0-2 down and if not for an excellent save late on from Ederson may have picked up a point.
  • Gerrard will be hoping that striker Danny Ings is fit to play some part in this one, although winger Leon Bailey will miss out after suffering a muscle injury against Man City and left-back Matt Targett may join him on the sidelines, with Ashley Young likely to start should that be the case.

LEICESTER

  • Leicester came from behind twice to secure a 2-2 draw away at Southampton, extending their unbeaten away run in the Premier League to four matches, having now not lost on their travels since September.
  • Of Leicester’s injured foursome who missed out against Southampton, James Justin and Youri Tielemans stand a small chance of returning in time to feature against Aston Villa and question marks remain over whether striker Jamie Vardy will be afforded a rest after playing 90 minutes in midweek.

THE PREDICTION

An intriguing clash is in prospect at Villa Park with Leicester slowly but surely starting to find their feet this season and with the likes of influential midfielder James Maddison in excellent form going forward, Aston Villa will need to be at their best here defensively. The way the hosts refused to give up against Man City was admirable and under Gerrard it is clear that they will always be capable of scoring goals. Neither are expected to sit back in this one with Villa likely to try and dictate play, although the visitors will pose a huge threat on the counter-attack with their pace. Therefore, backing both teams to score, as has been the case in both Aston Villa and Leicester’s last two league games looks to be the smart play here.

Tip: BOTH TEAMS TO SCORE
