THE LOWDOWN

PORTUGAL

  • Portugal made hard work of overcoming Ghana in their opening clash of the 2022 FIFA World Cup but ultimately earned a valuable victory and they will look to book their spot in the knockout stages with a second straight success at the tournament.
  • There are defensive improvements for Portugal to make and they may opt to hand a start to William Carvalho for this contest after they looked to have more control when he was introduced from the bench against Ghana.

URUGUAY

  • Uruguay were held to a goalless draw in their encounter with South Korea and they have plenty of work to do if they are to make it out of the group stage which could pile the pressure on them in this clash with Portugal.
  • A positive result is needed here to keep Uruguay right in the mix and despite failing to find the back of the net in that game with South Korea, they could well stick with the same side for this matchup.

THE KEY STATS

  • This is a repeat of their meeting in the round of 16 at Russia 2018 when Uruguay defeated Portugal 2-1, that was the only previous FIFA World Cup match between these two nations
  • Portugal have lost only one of their last 13 World Cup group stage matches (W7 D5)
  • Victory for Portugal would see them win two successive matches at the start of a World Cup final competition for the third time. On the two previous occasions they reached the semi-finals (1966 and 2006)
  • Portugal’s only two previous matches against South American opposition in a group stage at the World Cup were against Brazil. W 3-1 (1966) and D 1-1 (2010)
  • Against Ghana, Cristiano Ronaldo became the first player in history of the competition to score in five different FIFA World Cups (8 total goals - 1-2006; 1-2010; 1-2014; 4-2018; 1-2022)
  • Against Ghana, Cristiano Ronaldo became the second oldest player to score in FIFA World Cup history at the age of 37 years and 292 days. Cameroon's Roger Milla remains the oldest at 42 years and 39 days
  • Uruguay have lost only one of their last 12 FIFA World Cup group stage matches (W7 D4) and they are unbeaten in the last six (W5 D1)
  • Uruguay have kept eight clean sheets in their last ten FIFA World Cup group stage matches. They have not conceded a goal in their last five group stage matches
  • Uruguay have won their last three FIFA World Cup group stage matches against European nations and they are unbeaten in the last five (W3 D2)
  • Uruguay have lost only one of their previous ten international matches in 2022 (W7 D2)
  • Uruguay have kept seven clean sheets in their last eight international matches

THE PREDICTION

Portugal did enough to get the better of Ghana in their opening game, even though they were given a late scare when their opponents looked set to secure a dramatic draw. They know they will need to be better as they take on a potentially dangerous side in Uruguay but they will be content with their start, unlike their opponents. Uruguay had to settle for a point against South Korea and know a loss here would be very damaging and with the South Americans keeping seven clean sheets in their last eight games, expect them to be tough to break down which should lead to a low-scoring affair.

TIP: UNDER 2.5 GOALS
