England’s bowlers struggled at Headingley on Thursday and paid the price as Sri Lanka racked up 321/6 batting first. That proved to be enough in the ahead as the tourists’ struggling bowling attack did enough to restrict Harry Brook’s side to 305/9. The biggest blow for England however, was Jos Buttler suffering a hamstring injury which will almost certainly rule him out of this rubber match.
Even without Buttler, England are still stronger than Sri Lanka on paper but will need other experienced faces to step up, Joe Root being one such player. Root has yet to score a half-century in this series and on a usually batter-friendly surface like the Kia Oval, you would expect that to change here. Back 50 runs or more for Root in an England victory.
