THE TEAM NEWS

BANGLADESH

  • Following their hard-fought 1-2 T20i series victory in Zimbabwe, Bangladesh return home to face Australia in a five-match series as they look to ramp up their preparations for the upcoming T20i World Cup.
  • Bangladesh will be forced to take on the tourists without their two premier T20i openers as both Tamim Iqbal and Liton Das have been ruled out of the series, Iqbal due to a knee injury and Das as a result of a family matter.
  • After missing the quarantine deadline due to personal reasons, wicketkeeper Mushfiqur Rahim will also miss this series having not been given permission to enter the bio secure bubble despite being ready to play, a decision that has angered Bangladesh.

AUSTRALIA

  • Last month saw Australia thrashed 4-1 by the West Indies in their most recent T20i series and they’ll no doubt be looking for a huge improvement across the board here as they travel from the Caribbean to Dhaka.
  • The Aussies were without a number of key players in the West Indies such as opener David Warner, batter Steve Smith, all-rounders Glenn Maxwell and Marcus Stoinis along with fast bowler Pat Cummins and will once again have to make do without them all here.
  • Captain Aaron Finch will also not participate due to injury and wicketkeeper batter Matthew Wade has been named skipper for this five-match series in his place.

THE PREDICTION

It is a rare occasion when these two countries meet in T20i action, with Bangladesh and Australia having played each other just four times previously in 20 over cricket. Australia have won all four of those games and will be determined to maintain that unbeaten record here. Both teams are significantly weakened heading into this series and each are looking to players to put their hand up and show that they are worthy of a place in their respective country’s starting line-up for the T20i World Cup. Ultimately, the depth of Australia’s pool of players is stronger than that of Bangladesh and provided the rain doesn’t intervene here, the tourists should win the first match of this series.
