THE TEAM NEWS

NETHERLANDS

  • Netherlands’ inexperienced bowling attack was destroyed by England in the first ODI, as the tourists’ racked up 498/4 after being asked to bat first, a total which the Netherlands batters unsurprisingly got nowhere near chasing down.
  • The hosts only had themselves to blame after dropping two of the three players who went on to score centuries in the match and the fielding is something that needs to improve in this second ODI if they are to avoid another hammering.
  • Despite such a large defeat, it would be no surprise if Netherlands opt to field the same side for this next game with options limited from their point of view.

ENGLAND

  • England were expected to put the Netherlands bowling attack to the sword on Friday and they did not disappoint, racking up a record ODI score with the bat, taking advantage of the small boundaries on a flat pitch.
  • Jos Buttler’s return to England duty saw him smash the fastest ODI hundred from an England player, scoring 162 not out from just 70 balls in a match that also saw Phil Salt and Dawid Malan both score centuries.
  • England’s pace options were exclusively left-handers across the first ODI and Brydon Carse could come into the side should they wish to change that, although the expectation is that they will remain unchanged.

THE PREDICTION

The first ODI in this three-match series turned out to be the mismatch that everyone expected it to be as the vast gap between these two nations in terms of both resources and player ability was ruthlessly exposed. From a footballing perspective, it was akin to Premier League champions Man City facing a side at least four divisions lower than them. Having said that, the outcome may not have been so monstrous had Netherlands taken their catches in the field and their players will no doubt have learnt a lot from the experience of playing such a strong team. Unless the rain intervenes, England should once again cruise to victory in this second ODI, but hopefully the hosts will at least shorten the margin of defeat somewhat with an improved performance.
