THE TEAM NEWS

IRELAND

  • Ireland will have taken plenty of heart from their performance against India in their most recent T20i series heading into these ODIs vs New Zealand and they’ll be looking to execute an effective gameplan in the longer format of white ball cricket this time round.
  • Skipper Andy Balbirnie could hand ODI debuts to Stephen Doheny and/or Graham Hume with Doheny offering extra firepower with the bat if wanted, whilst Hume represents an alternate bowling option.

NEW ZEALAND

  • Covid-19 had an adverse effect on New Zealand’s preparation across their Test series against England and unfortunately, the same outcome has occurred here, with all-rounder Mitchell Santner a doubt for the first ODI after testing positive for the virus, therefore delaying his flight over to Ireland.
  • Tom Latham captains the side with Kane Williamson rested alongside Devon Conway, Trent Boult, Tim Southee and Devon Conway, all of whom won’t feature across this New Zealand tour of Ireland.

THE PREDICTION

Following their performance in the second T20i against India in particular, Ireland will be quietly confident that they can cause a surprise in this first ODI, especially when taking into account the players absent for the Black Caps. However, whilst New Zealand perhaps lack a sprinkling of star quality across their squad, they boast tried and tested performers in the 50 over format and the Irish batters will have their work cut out against the likes of Lockie Ferguson and Adam Milne. The tourists are a well-balanced team with a potent mixture of touch and aggression and are expected to get the better of Ireland in this opening contest.
