THE LOWDOWN

INDIA

  • Although India rallied bravely late on, they were unable to drag themselves back from a losing position, eventually falling by just 9 runs in the opening ODI of the series although for the margin to be so small is a credit to how well they fought.
  • A back problem rules Deepak Chahar out of this game and the remainder of the series, with all-rounder Washington Sundar added to the squad as his replacement.

SOUTH AFRICA

  • South Africa’s win in the first ODI, reduced to a 40-overs-a-side contest was absolutely crucial for them with these matches so important for them in terms of 50 over World Cup qualification.
  • An unbroken partnership of 139 between Heinrich Klaasen and David Miller parachuted the Proteas to what proved to be a winning score and Miller’s form in India especially has been a real plus point for South Africa this year in white ball cricket.

THE PREDICTION

India may not have their strongest squad on show across this series, but the first ODI showed that their strength-in-depth will see them give South Africa a real challenge. It looked like the tourists would sail to victory before Sanju Samson and Shreyas Iyer sparked a recovery and such players in the middle order give India welcome firepower should their top four not perform. South Africa though, are able to match them through the likes of Klaasen and Miller, so it would be no surprise to see a high-scoring game in Ranchi. As good a bowling attack that South Africa have though, India will be confident of bouncing back and with an improved showing from their top order in particular, it would be no surprise to see them level up the series.
