THE TEAM NEWS

ENGLAND

  • After a period of rest, reintroducing a number of their regular white ball players back into the fold backfired spectacularly for England in the first ODI as they were skittled out for just 110, their lowest ever 50-over score against India.
  • Four England players recorded scores of 0 including Joe Root, Liam Livingstone, Ben Stokes and Jason Roy, who struggles with the bat continue against India, although he has plenty of credit in the bank and will be persisted with.
  • England decided to go without a leg-spin bowler in the opening ODI with Matt Parkinson being left out and the Lancashire star could be recalled here, whilst Sam Curran is also pushing for a place in the team.

INDIA

  • India were indebted to the magnificent Jasprit Bumrah at the Kia Oval, who took career best figures of 6/19 as he ran through the England batting line-up, before openers Rohit Sharma and Shikhar Dhawan made light work of the run chase.
  • Bumrah’s brilliance rightly stole all the headlines, but he was well supported by Mohammed Shami who picked up three wickets himself, whilst Prasidh Krishna gained a scalp of his own.
  • Although India consistently rotated their squad across the three-match T20i series, it’s difficult to see them doing the same here following such a dominating performance on Tuesday, especially as the vast majority of their batters were not afforded any time at the crease such was the manner of victory.

THE PREDICTION

Jos Buttler defining England as coming third in a two-horse race in the first ODI was extremely accurate when considering that match-going fans saw just 44 overs of play, such was the speed and ruthlessness of India’s victory. This three-match series now moves across London to Lord’s and England have plenty of points to prove, not least their batters who were ripped to shreds by Bumrah. As strong a side as England are in white ball cricket, they have been outplayed by India so far in both the T20 and 50 over series with the bowling unit of the tourists having had the better of England’s batters. When taking into account the outstanding form of India, backing them to win here at Lord’s has to be favoured.
