THE TEAM NEWS

HOBART HURRICANES

  • Hobart Hurricanes kept their faint hopes of progressing to the finals alive as they edged Melbourne Renegades in a tight encounter but they must win their final two matches to give themselves a chance of making the final five.
  • The Hurricanes posted 190/3 thanks to a half-century from captain Matthew Wade whilst Macalister Wright also ended unbeaten on 70 but the Renegades put up a brilliant fight to try and chase the big total down.
  • The Renegades did in fact look set for the win but two wickets in the final two overs slowed their progress and the Hurricanes managed to hang on to win by four runs and their side is boosted by the inclusion of star players D’Arcy Short and James Faulkner.

SYDNEY THUNDER

  • Sydney Thunder’s chances of making the BBL|09 finals took a huge blow as they were on the end of a heavy loss to Perth Scorchers and despite sitting in a decent position on the ladder, the sheer number of teams chasing fifth spot leaves them in a precarious spot.
  • Despite a brilliant 85 from Alex Hales, the Thunder could only manage to score 153/5 which proved to be nowhere near enough on a nice batting wicket with the Scorchers chasing that total down with 27 balls to spare.
  • It is likely that Thunder will need to win their final two matches to have a chance of progressing and even that may not be enough but their bowling attack could be strengthened by the inclusion of Chris Tremain who comes in to their 13-man squad.

THE PREDICTION

Both Hobart Hurricanes and Sydney Thunder need to win-out from this point on to give themselves any chance of making the finals. Even if one of their pair manage that feat, they could still find themselves outside of the top five come the end of the round robin. The Hurricanes will definitely be eliminated with defeat but are boosted by the return of James Faulkner from injury and D’Arcy Short from international duty and with that pair on board, they should be able to lead their side to a vital win.
