WHO ARE THE LEADING MEDAL CONTENDERS?
The world record holder in the men’s 100m freestyle is Brazil’s Cesar Cielo. Cielo hit a time of 46.91 seconds in 2009 in Rome at the World Championships. The Commonwealth Games record is 47.98 seconds, set by Brent Hayden of Canada at the 2010 event in Delhi.
At the Tokyo Olympics last summer, the gold medal was taken by Caeleb Dressel in 47.02 seconds, breaking the Olympic Record. However, in silver position, was Kyle Chalmers of Australia and the Aussie is firm favourite for this race.
TSZ’S PREDICTION
Chalmers took gold in Rio but silver in Tokyo in this event. In between that, he picked up four gold medals at the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games in 2018 but finished joint-second in this race alongside Chad Le Clos. Duncan Scott, of Scotland, took gold there. Chalmers has now fully recovered from a persistent shoulder injury, though, and is expected to come out on top this year.
TSZ Tip: KYLE CHALMERS (AUSTRALIA) TO WIN
