The top seed fell to a limp 6-3 6-1 defeat to China’s unranked Zhuoxuan Bai in what proved to be an almighty opening round shock.
Indeed, the former world number 83 clinched her first victory since returning from a 14-month absence earlier this month. The 22-year-old will now take on compatriot Hanyu Guo, who edged Alina Korneeva 3-6 6-2 7-6.
The 27-year-old Guo is ranked at a career high 179 so it’s clear Bai has the greater pedigree, it’s just a question of whether she has enough in the tank to recover and claim back-to-back wins so early in her comeback.
