Zeynep Sonmez is through to her second quarter-final of the season after her opponent Anastasia Potapova retired in the second set of their round-of-16 match. Sonmez was leading 6-1 2-0, having not even faced a break point. She will now be seeking a first semi-final since winning the Merida Open back in 2024.
Magda Linette will be standing in her way. She beat Mia Pohankova in straight sets to advance to the last eight. Pohankova won the girls’ singles title at Wimbledon last year and produced a shock in the previous round by defeating Clara Tauson, but she was second best here as Linette created 11 break point opportunities on her way to winning 6-2 6-2.
Sonmez does lead the head-to-head 1-0 after a win in Merida last year, but Linette was forced to retire in the second set of that match. The Turk will be determined to continue her run at the event, but Linette has looked very solid so far.
