Zeynep Sonmez produced a stirring fightback as she came from a set down to beat Ann Li in the round-of-16. This was a rematch of the 2024 final, which Sonmez won comfortably, but Li seemed on course for revenge as she took the first set and opened up a 4-2 lead in the second. However, Sonmez would break back and edge ahead in the second set tiebreak to draw level. The Turk won the first three games of the decider and though Li would retrieve one of those breaks, Sonmez clinched a 3-6 7-6 (7) 6-4 win after two hours and 31 minutes.
She now takes on Cristina Bucsa. The Spaniard won in straight sets against Mariana Stakusic. The first set was a topsy-turvy affair, with six breaks of serve overall. Bucsa failed to serve the set out but dominated the tiebreak and largely controlled the second set to win 7-6 (1) 6-3.
Sonmez is a former champion at this event and showed all of her fighting qualities in her last match. She is worth backing in this match against Bucsa.
