Zeynep Sonmez vs Coco Gauff prediction

Zeynep Sonmez has lost in the second-round of her last four tournaments, stretching back to Wimbledon. The Turk was comfortably beaten by Amanda Anisimova at the Cincinnati Open last time out. Nevertheless, she has reached three tour-level quarter-finals this season, and entered the top 50 of the world rankings for the first time in her career in July. 

Her first-round opponent is 2023 champion and world number four Coco Gauff. The American enjoyed the perfect preparation for the final slam of the year, claiming her second Cincinnati Open title. Gauff beat Jessica Pegula in the final and only dropped the one set across the whole tournament. The 22-year-old has been one of the most consistent players on tour this season, with three WTA 1000 final appearances in total, while she was also just one point away from the Wimbledon final.

Gauff’s game appears to be coming together at just the right time, and she heads to New York as one of the leading contenders for the title. Sonmez is unlikely to pose too many problems for the American in the opening round.
