Zeynep Sonmez recovered from a tough start to impressively book her place in round two of Indian Wells. The Turk went 3-0 down but broke back and went on to take the first set on a tiebreak, saving a set point before reeling off three points in a row. That proved decisive as Sonmez increased her level in the second, winning all six games to seal a 7-6 (7) 6-0 win. She reached the quarter-finals of the Merida Open last week.
Anna Kalinskaya is her opponent after the Russian received a bye. Her best result of the season was at the Qatar Open, as she reached the quarter-finals, following wins over the likes of Emma Navarro and Elina Svitolina, but she then lost to eventual winner Karolina Muchova. Her last tournament was in Dubai, losing in round two to Coco Gauff.
Kalinskaya knows how to be consistent on this surface, and she will be the favourite to beat Sonmez and advance to the third-round.
