Zeynep Sonmez came back from the brink at the Cincinnati Open as she recovered from a set and a break down to beat Daria Kasatkina. Sonmez went behind after the first set and looked on course for an early exit as Kasatkina served for the match at 5-4 up in the second. However, she double faulted on match point, and Sonmez would level the encounter after winning a tiebreak. She eventually went on to win 2-6 7-6 (4) 6-3.
Her next opponent is Amanda Anisimova. The American’s indifferent season continued as she won just a single match in Toronto. The two-time Grand Slam finalist was handed a walkover in her opening round and then had to come from a set down to beat Nikola Bartunkova. She was well beaten by Elina Svitolina in the round-of-16.
Anisimova has not been close to her best for some time now, but this quick surface does suit her game well. Sonmez was still vulnerable in the first-round, and she can’t afford another slow start against the former world number three.
