Yuliia Starodubtseva is ranked outside of the top 100 of the world rankings in the lead up to the Australian Open. She began the season in Auckland with two wins in qualifying but then fell to a first-round loss to Katie Boulter. However, she would hit back with three straight wins to make the main draw in Melbourne.
She takes on Ajla Tomljanovic. The home favourite has not enjoyed the best preparation in the lead up to this tournament. She could only make round two in Brisbane, though did push Karolina Muchova all the way in three sets. She competed in Adelaide but had to retire after going an early break down to Maya Joint in the first set. She looked to be struggling with a pectoral injury.
Tomljanovic was emotional as she was forced to retire in Adelaide and may not be 100% if she faces Starodubtseva. The Ukrainian has all the momentum from her wins in qualifying and has the opportunity to make it through to round two.
