Yulia Starodubtseva enters Cincinnati on the back of a third-round finish in Montreal. This included a stunning 6-1 6-1 victory over 21st seed Magdalena Frech. However, she struggled in round three against Clara Tauson, fading away and losing 6-3 6-0. Nevertheless, Starodubtseva has only got past that stage of a tournament once this year, making the round-of-16 in March at the end of April.
She faces qualifier Leolia Jeanjean in round one. Jeanjean enters the main draw after victories over Carol Zhao and Rebeka Masarova. She lost to Eva Lys last week in Montreal. Her best results have been on the ITF circuit, making three finals but failing to win any of them. She is currently ranked 98 in the world.
This is their first match on the WTA Tour, but they did play earlier on in the season during the qualifying stage of the Merida Open. Jeanjean easily defeated the Ukrainian 6-1 6-4. Nevertheless, Starodubtseva is in slightly better form now and showed some of her undoubted quality last week in Canada. She will be the favourite to come through.
