Yulia Putintseva competed in her first event for over a month in Merida last week, but it was short-lived, as she lost to Victoria Jimenez Kasintseva in the first-round. Putintseva trailed after the first set, and despite levelling the match up, she would lose in three. She impressed last month at the Australian Open, reaching the round-of-16.
Paula Badosa’s injury struggles continued in Dubai last month as she retired from her second-round match against Elina Svitolina. The Spaniard had produced a fine display in round one to defeat Katerina Siniakova and made a brilliant start against Svitolina, opening up a 4-1 lead. However, she would then lose five games in a row, calling for treatment at the end of the set and ending her participation.
Badosa leads the head-to-head 4-1. If she is fit, the former world number two will be a clear favourite to win, but the 2021 champion’s fitness is very unpredictable at this stage of her career.
