Yulia Putintseva’s Canadian Open ended at the first-round stage as she was beaten by Shuai Zhang in straight sets. Putintseva had won their previous seven meetings, but she was blown away by her Chinese opponent, who won 6-4 6-1. The Kazakh’s best display of the season was right at the start of the year as she advanced to the round-of-16 at the Australian Open, her best ever result in Melbourne. However, there have also been a number of early exits from tournaments in 2026.
She faces Liudmila Samsonova in round one of the Cincinnati Open. The Russian produced some of her best tennis of the season in Toronto. She began her campaign with a win over Janice Tjen and then beat two-time Grand Slam singles champion Barbora Krejcikova. Another win followed against Maya Joint, with Samsonova now through to the round-of-16. She was a double break up in the deciding set against world number two Elena Rybakina and was on the brink of the last eight, but Rybakina came back to win.
