Yulia Putintseva reached the round-of-16 at the Australian Open for the first time after a hard-fought win over Zeynep Sonmez. The Kazakhstani took the first set and looked on course for victory as she served for the match at 6-5, only for Sonmez to break back and win the resulting tiebreak. Putintseva broke in the eighth game of the third set and served it out to win 6-3 6-7 (3) 6-3 after two hours and 34 minutes.
She faces Iva Jovic next. The teenager continued her best run at a Grand Slam after picking up one of the most impressive wins of her young career so far, defeating two-time Grand Slam finalist Jasmine Paolini in straight sets. The 18-year-old dominated the first set and while she failed to serve out the match at 6-5 in the second, she won the last four points of the tiebreak to win 6-2 7-6 (3).
Jovic has now won 10 of her 12 matches this season and the youngster is the clear favourite to make a Grand Slam quarter-final for the first time.
