In the first round of the French Open, Yulia Putintseva defeated Taylah Gibson from behind, winning 6-4 4-6 1-6. The Kazakh has enjoyed her best Grand Slam performances on the clay of Roland Garros, having twice been a quarter-finalist back in 2016 and then 2018.
Camila Osorio pulled off a surprise and comfortable victory the other day as she knocked out number 14 seed Ekaterina Alexandrova in the first round. The Colombian hasn’t made it past the second round of the French Open, with this being the fourth time she has reached that stage.
Osorio has been reasonable at WTA 1000 events but it will take some going to really turn it on here and the 31-year-old Putintseva will fancy herself to really begin to rediscover her previous Roland Garros form.
