He excelled in Shanghai as he got through the two qualifying rounds and went on to beat Lorenzo Sonego and Frances Tiafoe to make round three. He threatened a big shock as he took the first set against 24-time Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic but the Serb would come back to win.
Matteo Arnaldi’s poor run of form continued in Asia as he lost in the first-round of the Hangzhou Open and failed to qualify in Tokyo. He did pick up a victory in Shanghai, but any hopes of a deep run were extinguished by Alejandro Davidovich Fokina, who defeated the Italian in straight sets.
Arnaldi is the higher ranked player, but Hanfmann has momentum on his side after his recent performances. He is likely to be the aggressor from the start and has the game to cause problems on this surface.
