Yannick Hanfmann qualified for the tournament with two wins. He was unable to the same at the Paris Masters, as he lost in the second stage of qualifying to Jacob Fearnley. His best result on the ATP Tour this season was a run to the quarter-finals in Kitzbuhel during the summer. He also produced a fine showing in Shanghai during the Asian swing as he came through qualifying and reached round three, taking the first set against 24-time Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic before going on to lose.
Ivan Ivanov was handed a wildcard to compete in Athens and will make his full debut on the ATP Tour. The 17-year-old Bulgarian is viewed as a possible star of the future, as he’s won two junior slams this season at Wimbledon and the US Open. He also won an ITF title in Szentendre and has already competed for Bulgaria at the Davis Cup.
This is a landmark moment for Ivanov and there is a chance he rises to the occasion, but Hanfmann is an experienced competitor and should be able to get the better of the teenager.
