Hanfmann won his first-round match at the Cincinnati Open after a straight sets victory over Luca Van Assche.
He now plays Arthur Fils, with the Frenchman receiving a bye in round one. Fils enjoyed his best result since his return from injury, as he advanced to the quarter-finals in Montreal. However, he was then beaten by Rafael Jodar for the second time in 10 days, following an earlier defeat in Washington.
It’s a pretty quick turnaround for Fils, and this match is likely to test his fitness. The Frenchman leads the head-to-head 1-0 after an easy win in Monte-Carlo two years ago. Hanfmann should be able to keep this competitive, but Fils is a clear favourite.
