Xiyu Wang produced a brilliant display as she came from a set down to beat Leylah Fernandez. The Chinese player, who had to qualify for the event, dominated sets two and three to win 3-6 6-2 6-2 after two hours and two minutes. She has now won 36 of her 44 matches overall in 2026, having also won three events on the ITF circuit.
She faces Elina Svitolina after the Ukrainian came back from the brink to beat Tereza Valentova. Svitolina went a set down and had to save seven match points in the second, before dominating the decider to win 3-6 7-6 (5) 6-0 after two hours and 22 minutes.
The pair have met once previously, with Svitolina recovering from a set down to defeat Wang in Auckland two years ago. Wang’s run through qualifying and victory over Fernandez should not be underestimated, especially after Svitolina coming perilously close to elimination in the previous round.
However, the Ukrainian has been operating at a much higher level in 2026, and her consistency, defence and greater experience should eventually see her through.
