Xinyu Wang suffered a first-round exit at the Canadian Open to Daria Kasatkina last time out. She comfortably took the lead after set one, but Kasatkina fought back to win 1-6 7-6 (5) 7-5. Aside from a run to the semi-finals of the Bad Homburg Open in June, the Chinese player has struggled to produce deep runs at events since February. Her season began strongly at the Australian Open as she reached the round-of-16, but her form has taken a slide since that point.
Her first-round opponent is Hanne Vandewinkel. The Belgian qualified for this WTA 1000 event after a win over Rebecca Sramkova. This has been an impressive campaign from the 22-year-old, as she has won four titles on the ITF circuit, along with two other final appearances. Vandewinkel made her top 100 debut at the end of last month.
This will be a challenge for Wang, though she is still the favourite.
