Vit Kopriva earned a win on the Challenger Tour in Napoli in late March, defeating top seed Luciano Darderi in the final. He followed that up with quarter-finals in Marrakech and Ostravia before winning four matches in total at the Italian Open including qualifying, losing in the third-round to Jack Draper. The Czech has made some impressive strides over the past two months.
He faces Thiago Monteiro in round one. The Brazilian is not in the best of form and couldn’t make it out of qualifying for the Geneva Open last time out. His best run occurred earlier in the season as he made the finals of both Challenger events in Santiago and Asuncion which took place in March.
Monteiro does have far more experience and reached the third-round of Roland Garros five years ago. Kopriva is yet to win a Grand Slam match but won’t get a better chance than this given his fine recent form on clay. He may have some nervy moments but we’re backing the Czech to get the job done.
