Victoria Mboko vs Naomi Osaka prediction

Victoria Mboko’s journey to the Canadian Open final is arguably the story of the year when it comes to tennis. Her victory over Elena Rybakina in the semi-finals saw the 18-year-old produce one of the best comebacks we’ve seen on the WTA tour. Down a set, the Canadian rallied in front of the home crowd to win 1-6, 7-5, 7-6, saving a match point in the process. Mboko has now beaten three Grand Slam champions this week and in her first career final, a fourth stands between her and the title.

Naomi Osaka has rolled back the years in Montreal, reminding fans just how dominant she was when at her best. The Japanese superstar won four Grand Slams on the hard court and we’ve seen over the course of this tournament why Osaka at peak powers is arguably the best player on the circuit. Each of her last four matches has seen Osaka triumph without dropping a set and the influence of new coach Tomasz Wiktorowski cannot be underestimated.

Mboko has handled pressure incredibly well for a teenager with a lack of big tournament experience, but now she’s in the final, there feels like more expectation rather than hope among Canadian fans and whether this could adversely affect Mboko remains to be seen, especially when taking into account how Amanda Anisimova fell apart in her maidan Grand Slam final at Wimbledon earlier this summer.

Whilst it’s been a while, Osaka has vast experience of these big finals and the toll they take both physically and mentally. The way she is playing, Osaka won’t let Mboko off the hook in the same way that Rybakina did and with that in mind, Osaka has to be favoured to win out despite Mboko’s home advantage.
