Victoria Mboko has 13 wins from her 17 matches this season and has reached the top 10 of the world rankings for the first time in her young career. The Canadian reached the round-of-16 at a Grand Slam for the first time in Melbourne, losing to world number one Aryna Sabalenka. She has competed in just one tournament since then, but it was another brilliant run as she defeated the likes of Mirra Andreeva and Elena Rybakina to reach the final in Doha. Mboko was denied a second WTA 1000 title as she lost in the final to Karolina Muchova. Mboko also got through to a final in Adelaide at the start of the year.
The youngster takes on Kimberly Birrell in round two after receiving a bye. Birrell won her first-round match against Oksana Selekhmeteva. The Australian was always in control as she wrapped up a 6-1 6-4 win. Birrell got through to the semi-finals of the ATX Open last week and now has four wins from her last five matches.
Mboko leads the head-to-head 2-0 and did not drop a set to Birrell in either of those matches. The Canadian defeated Birrell on her way to the Canadian Open last year, while she also beat her earlier this year in Adelaide. She is the commanding favourite to win in similar fashion here.
