Victoria Jimenez Kasintseva came from a set down to beat Magda Linette in a tight three set match. The Romanian was a break up in the first, but Linette broke back and pounced again when Jimenez Kasintseva was serving to stay in the set. Jimenez Kasintseva held her nerve in the tiebreak to keep her hopes alive and was on course for victory after breaking in the deciding set. Despite failing to serve the match out, she broke again to win 5-7 7-6 (5) 7-5 after three hours and 20 minutes.
She now faces Shuai Zhang in the next round after she defeated Emma Navarro in straight sets. Zhang had won their two previous meetings, and she maintained her undefeated record against the American with a 6-4 6-4 win. Zhang was a break down in both sets but recovered magnificently and is now through to her first quarter-final of the season.
There is no clear favourite for this match, though Jimenez Kasintseva will be grateful for an extra day’s rest following her three hour epic in the previous round.
