Veronika Erjavec is ranked outside the 100 in the world but earned her place in the main draw through three wins in the qualifying rounds. The Slovenian mainly competes at WTA 125 and Challenger tournaments. Her 2025 campaign included quarter-final runs at those events, but she’s less battle-tested against the top 60 tour-level players. She hasn’t broken through at a Grand Slam main draw yet, having lost in the first-round here last year.
Magdalena Frech struggled for form last season and ended the campaign with a negative win-loss record. She did not get through to the last four of any tournament she competed in, with her best result being two quarter-final finishes in Washington and Guadalajara. Frech advanced to round three in Melbourne last year. She won her first-round match in Hobart earlier this month but then pulled out of the event before her match with Emma Raducanu.
As long as she is fit, this should be a win for French. Her higher ranking, greater experience and firepower on the hard courts make her the clear favourite.
