Venus Williams vs Karolina Muchova prediction
45-year-old Venus Williams returns to the US Open as she bids to become the oldest woman to win a Grand Slam match since Martina Navratilova in 2004.
The seven-time Grand Slam champion somewhat unexpectedly returned to the circuit at the Washington Open last month, defeating compatriot Peyton Stearns before losing to Magdalena Frech in the second round. The former world number one then played in Cincinnati, where she lost in straight sets to Jessica Bouzas Maneiro.
Karolina Muchova comes into the US Open as the 11th seed, although not since February has she gone beyond the round of 16 at a singles event.
The 29-year-old has reached consecutive semi-finals of the US Open though, and recently reached the quarter-finals of the revamped mixed doubles event, lining up against Venus in the round of 16.
Muchova and Williams’ only previous singles meeting came at this very tournament five years ago, with the former winning 6-3, 7-5 on that occasion, again in the first round A similar outcome should be expected here, as despite the fact Muchova is not playing her best tennis right now, she should still have too much in the tank for fan-favourite Williams, whose best days are way behind her.
