Varvara Gracheva continued her wonderful campaign in Cincinnati as she recovered from a slow start to beat Ella Seidel to book her place in the quarter-finals of a Masters 1000 event for the first time. She broke Seidel’s serve on six occasions in the last two sets to win 2-6 6-1 6-1. Gracheva will return to the top 100 of the world rankings after this tournament.
She will face Veronika Kudermetova for a place in the last four. Kudermetova produced a strong display to defeat Magda Linette 6-4 6-3. She went an early break down in the second set but responded well to win 6-4 6-3 and make her third quarter-final of the season.
Kudermetova leads the head-to-head 2-0 and they were both on outdoor hard courts. Their first meeting saw the Russian recover from a set down to win in the second-round of the Australian Open four years ago, and she then thrashed Gracheva 6-1 6-0 in their most recent encounter at the Jasmin Open.
