Varvara Gracheva vs Maria Sakkari prediction

Maria Sakkari is showing signs of the form that saw her rise to world number three as she rampaged past Jasmine Paolini in Doha.

The Greek scored the upset courtesy of a 6-4 6-2 victory over the shell-shocked Italian sixth seed.

Sakkari should now push back into the world’s top 50 but will have designs on going deeper given how well she has played so far at this tournament.

Up next, it’s France’s Varvara Gracheva who has been outstanding through qualifying and up to her second round upset of ninth seed Linda Noskova.

The world number 73 edged the Czech 6-2 2-6 7-5 in a hard-fought affair to set up a fourth career showdown with Sakkari.

The Greek leads the head-to-head 2-1 and cruised to a straight sets win in their only match on a hardcourt, but Gracheva did prevail in their most recent clash on the clay of Roland Garros in 2024.

There’s a lot to suggest this could go the way of Varvara’s match with Noskova and may go to the wire and don’t rule out the French underdog given the names she’s already got the better of this week.
